FESTIVALS OF KERALA

Festivals begin in Kerala after the monsoon period in August. From September (Boat Race) to Thrissur Pooram in April.

Onam is celebrated with out any difference in caste and religion. It is related with King Mahabali who was ruling Kerala. This festival falls on Oct/Sep.

Koratty Muthy's Feast Koratty is a small village near Thrissur. Koratty Muthy is the local name for Virgin Mary. In the second week of October this village comes alive to celebrate the feast at  St. Mary's Church here.

Neelamperoor pooram Patayani Neelemperoor Pooram Padayani is held at the precincts of the beautiful temple of Goddess Bhagavathy at Neelemperoor near Kottayam. Padayani is a symbolic victory march of Goddess Kaali after vanquishing Darika. This festival is during Oct.

Navarathri Festival

Navrathri fetivals last for nine (nav) days. The nine different aspects of Devi are worshipped over the nine days. This festival falls on October.

Maramon Conventionis the largest Christian gathering in Asia.  Maramon in  Kozhencherry lies on the banks of the rive Pampa about 16 kilometres east of Tiruvalla. Maramon is the birth place of Palakkunnathu Abraham Maplah, leader of the reformation in the Syrian Church of Malabar in the 19th century.

Athachamayam
This festival marks the beginning of Onam, a ten day celebration in a  spectacular manner. The event today commemorates a royal custom of the Maharajas of erstwhile Kochi State. Athachamayam celebrations commemorates the olden days and  still try retain its majestic charm.
Jain Festival Palakkad Near Palakkad in Jainamedu thee is an ancient Jain Temple. According to a legend, one Sutar, head of the Jains, built this temple 500 years ago for the Jain sage Chandranathaswamy. Nehru Trophy Boat Race Alappuzha's Nehru Trophy Boat Race began in 1952 when India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, visited Alappuzha. It is now a major celebration before Onam.  This event features the gigantic snake-boats of Kerala, known as Chundans.
